Job Summary: The Automotive Mechanic 2 for the University of Oregon Motor Pool is responsible for the maintenance, basic to complex repair, and inspection of a fleet of university-owned Motor Pool vehicles, including cars, SUVs, minivans, 12-passenger vans, and trucks. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all motor pool vehicles, supporting the transportation needs of university departments, faculty, staff, and students. The Mechanic will need a wide breadth of mechanical skills to be successful in this role. They will diagnose mechanical issues, perform preventive maintenance, conduct safety checks, and address repairs ranging from routine services to more complex mechanical problems. Reporting directly to the Motor Pool Manager, the Automotive Mechanic works both independently and as a member of a collaborative team, frequently taking ownership of tasks and managing them through completion.

Job Responsibilities: In addition to technical skills, this position requires strong organizational abilities to manage work orders, document services performed and maintain accurate records in alignment with State and University protocols. The Automotive Mechanic collaborates closely with other motor pool staff, the Motor Pool Manager, and UO Fleet Services to ensure that all vehicles meet high standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. This role also contributes to inventory management for parts, tools, and supplies and upholds best practices in safety and hazardous material handling. As a representative of the Motor Pool team, the Automotive Mechanic may occasionally provide guidance or instruction on vehicle use and safety to drivers, serving as a resource for the university community and supporting campus mobility. It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Four years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience diagnosing and performing a variety of complex repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and three years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with an ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Strong analytical, problem identification, and resolution skills.
  • Ability to consistently complete assignments and perform functions in a timely manner with minimal errors.
  • Effective communication skills, with a customer-focused approach to service.
  • Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a safe and safety-conscious workplace.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience working in light duty fleet that includes short-term rental vehicles.
  • Experience diagnosing vehicle computer codes.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair of electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • Experience using fleet management software to open work orders, record labor and parts, make reservations, dispatch vehicles, and update vehicle inventory.
  • Degree or completion of a certified training program in automotive mechanics.
  • ASE Master Certification in Automotive.

Compensation: Salary: $22.40 - $34.11 per hour
